What Are Raccoons?

The raccoon is a North American animal species. They have small, pointed face with black masks across their eyes. Adult raccoon’s grow up to be around two feet tall and weigh about 15 pounds.

The raccoon is nocturnal so they spend most of their time during the day asleep or resting in tree cavities. Male raccoon’s may fight for territory, but this usually only happens when one male attempts to enter an already-established territory.

Wooded areas near bodies of water are attracted to them because they make denning sites out of hollowed trees. Their bodies are agile and powerful making them great climbers and swimmers.

Signs of an Infestation

There are five signs you should look for if you suspect a raccoon infestation:

Feces or Urine Smell that Persists

Raccoon’s typically leave their feces or urine around where they have been because they are trying to mark their territory. If you notice the poop is coming from one particular spot, it could mean that there’s a den nearby- check the area closely to see if any animals come out of hiding.

Scratching Noises at Night

If you’re hearing scratching noises coming from your attic, it may be an indication that raccoon’s have set up residence inside your home. They will sometimes claw at ceiling vents and walls, so this noise may also be accompanied by a foul smell that smells like something died- this would be caused by them defecating on top of their fecal matter to cover up their tracks.

Evidence of Nesting

If you find nests made out of leaves and sticks near your home, it can mean that raccoon’s are living close by. Look up high and low near trees as well as bushes- they’ll often make nests high up off the ground so they can stay safe during hibernation season.

Your Home May Be Damaged From the Outside

If you notice that your siding or roof is damaged, you may want to inspect your attic. Raccoon’s are known for chewing through drywall, insulation, siding, ceiling vents and wiring- if your home shows these signs it’s likely that raccoon’s have been living there without your knowledge.

Acting Strangely with Your Pet

If you notice that your cat or dog is acting aggressively toward something inside your home, it may be an indication that a raccoon or other animal has made itself at home. Signs that they are trying to protect their young would include excessive barking, howling, and even urinating inside.

What Damage Can Raccoon's Cause?

  • Electrical damage can happen when raccoon’s chew on wires, which can be very costly. The best thing to do is install hardware cloth over the crawl space vents on your house. You should also put mesh screens over windows or air vents. You should also make sure that you keep your yard clean from fallen fruit so that the raccoon’s don’t come into contact with them.
  • Insulation damage happens when raccoon’s tear open insulation and take out the insulation material inside. Animals like raccoon’s will take it for their own nest-building materials.
  • Raccoons can damage your lawn and garden. They dig into your lawn looking for worms or grubs. They will also tear apart plants as they are trying to get at insects that are in them. You can keep them out by covering up any holes where they can enter.
  • Raccoons can carry a variety of diseases, including rabies, roundworm, Baylisascaris procyonis (raccoon ascarids), Toxoplasma gondii (feline infectious enteritis), Salmonellosis and Leptospirosis. Although they aren’t always infected with these diseases, they can shed them through their saliva and feces.
  • Raccoons can spread rabies through their feces. If they have access to your property, then this can be a huge concern. Their droppings could contaminate water supplies or food sources.
