Insects Can Be Hard to Find.

Drain Flies

Drain Flies

Drain flies are a species of fly from the nematoceran family, also known as psychodidae. These flies hail from the diptera order. Some may know them as moth flies. They can be found almost anywhere in North America and rest of the world, wherever standing water accumulates for at least a week. These flies have a distinctive appearance, thanks to their hairy, short bodies that are equipped with wings. Adult drain flies have leaf shaped wings and long antennae. They range in size from one fifty of an inch to one sixth of an inch and have a negligible weight. Drain flies are considered to be weak fliers, only able to travel a few feet at a time. They prefer to move from place to place by hopping and jumping.

Fleas & Ticks

Fleas and Ticks

Ticks feed on the blood of animals and may live in close association with their hosts. They’re part of the larger informal category of biting pests. Tick bites are harmless most of the time, usually causing only minor symptoms like redness, swelling or a sore on the skin. However, some ticks can transmit bacteria that cause diseases like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Ticks attach themselves for a period of time, and then drop off their host to lay eggs. They require a blood meal at each stage of life in order to grow. The female tick must engorge herself with blood to obtain the nourishment necessary to produce the thousands of eggs she lays. Despite the large number of eggs produced, only a small percentage will make it to maturity.

Hornets

Hornets

Hornets are distinguishable from other types of wasps due to their larger size, painful sting, and hostile behaviour when threatened or defending their nest. Classified according to the location of their colony, the pests fall into two genera: Vespula and Dolichovespula. Vespula hornets build their nests into the ground or a similarly concealed site, while Dolichovespula hornets are aerial and situate their nests several metres off the ground. Hornets are social insects that are ultimately beneficial, as they help control pest insects. Although they may be aggressive, they do not attack unless provoked. If a nest is located in the ground and people in close proximity have a particular sensitivity to hornet stings, then they have to be controlled.

Wasps

Wasps

There are estimated to be 100,000 species of wasps n the families Braconidae and Ichneumonidae. A typical wasp is hairless, unlike common species of bees. Wasps possess three distinct body parts: head, thorax, and abdomen. The thorax is joined to the abdomen by a constricted petiole giving the appearance of a thin/slender waist. The thorax has three pairs of legs and two pairs of membranous wings which are used for flying. The body size and colour of a wasp varies depending on species. Yellow jackets and hornets are stout and very colourful with bold yellow, white, and black markings on their bodies and faces. Paper wasps on the other hand are relatively long and thin-bodied (16 – 25 mm), long-legged, and have yellow-reddish and black markings. Mud daubers are very distinct, with very long bodies, 13 – 25mm long, with either long or stalked abdomen. Compared to other wasps, mud daubers are not so colourful; they are mainly black with occasional pale-yellow markings.

Silverfish

Silverfish

Notably elusive, silverfish are nocturnal creatures that move swiftly when disturbed to escape detection. Silverfish prefer dark, moist environments with humidity levels between 75 and 95 percent. Outdoors, silverfish primarily live under rocks, leaf mold, and tree bark. In residential buildings, common silverfish habitats include basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and attics. The insects often inhabit the cracks and crevices of walls and floors. Normally capable of moving at rapid speeds, silverfish lack the ability to climb smooth surfaces. For silverfish, the reproductive process begins with an elaborate mating ritual performed between males and females. At the conclusion of the ritual, male silverfish deposit a sperm capsule that the female absorbs for fertilization.

Bed Bugs

What are Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are small and wingless insects. Which only feed on blood. They are usually nocturnal insects and often hide in the cracks and crevices close to where people sleep or sit. They are reddish-brown, flat, oval creatures. They are active at night when they come out and feed on your blood while you sleep.

Generally, Bed bugs live in cracks and crevices near beds so it is recommended not to leave any clothes on the floor or mattresses exposed when sleeping. The easiest way for a bed bug to get into your home is through your luggage when you travel; however, bed bugs have also been found hiding in rugs, shoes, behind pictures, chairs, couches, carpets, etc.

Bed bugs average size of a bed bug when they aren’t filled with blood is 1⁄4 inch long. When they feed, they swell up and turn a dark red color after feeding. Adult bed bugs grow to about one-fourth inch long by the time their eggs are ready for hatching. Their bodies are flat and broad so that they can fit between bed sheets or cracks in furniture. Bed bugs do not have wings and cannot fly or jump so it’s hard to get rid of them without help from our professional pest control services.

What are the Signs of an Infestation?

There are few signs that indicate a bed bug infestation, so it is best to be vigilant. Bed bugs can easily be spread by humans traveling and bringing home bed bugs on their clothes, or even by being bitten themselves.

The most obvious sign of a bed bug infestation is the appearance of small red bumps on the skin that itch and burn. You may also see the actual bugs themselves if they have been crushed or disturbed while sleeping or sitting at your desk.

The smell of bed bugs cannot be detected until the later stages of infestation. Their smell is described as musty, damp, and like canned vegetables has often already permeated clothing items and furniture before you notice any bites on yourself. If you notice these smells it is time to call an exterminator!

Once bed bugs have matured, they leave behind tiny bits of eggshells. One of the earliest signs is that your bed sheets may contain small black pieces of bed bug feces. These are not eggs; they are actually fecal matter excreted when bed bugs feed.

If you notice all these signs and symptoms you might want to contact our bed bug removal service for help with bed bugs size issues. It is important to remember that bedbugs reproduce rapidly, meaning there could be hundreds of eggs hidden inside your mattress or nearby furniture. We offer free estimates and free inspection services so don’t hesitate to reach out today!

Do Bedbugs Spread Diseases?

Bed bugs usually don’t transmit diseases but they can cause itchy welts on people who are bitten by them which can cause embarrassment or distress among sufferers. You should get them removed from your home as soon as possible because bed bugs feed on blood from human hosts. Bites may not be felt, but they can cause skin irritations, sores, rashes, and other symptoms. They can cause skin damage and have a chance of causing a secondary skin infection if they stay on the skin too long.
